How Many T-Shirts Does a Man Actually Need?

Buying t-shirts one at a time is the most expensive way to do it, and it is also the reason most men's drawers contain a rotation of four decent shirts and eight they never wear. Here is how to work out the number you actually need.

Start with your laundry cycle

The number of t-shirts you need is a function of one thing: how often you do laundry. Everything else is preference.

You wash Everyday tees Why
Twice a week 5 to 7 Covers the gap plus one spare
Once a week 8 to 10 One per day plus margin
Every two weeks 12 to 14 Full cycle without rewearing

If a t-shirt is your default layer rather than an occasional one, take the top of each range. If you wear shirts over tees most days, take the bottom.

Fewer, better, actually works out cheaper

The argument against buying good t-shirts is that they cost more per shirt. The argument for them is cost per wear, and it usually wins because thin shirts do not fail gradually, they fail suddenly. The collar goes, the hem curls, and the shirt is finished regardless of how much life the fabric had left.

A shirt you wear twice a week for three years is roughly 300 wears. A shirt that loses its collar after eight months is roughly 70. The shirt that costs three times as much is still cheaper per wear if it lasts four times as long.

How pack pricing changes the maths

Most brands sell t-shirts one at a time at a flat price. Where packs exist, the per shirt cost drops meaningfully once you are buying the quantity you need anyway.

For reference, here is how TGTHR's pricing works against a $75 single:

Pack Total Per shirt Saving
Single $75 $75.00 โ€”
2-Pack $120 $60.00 20%
3-Pack $168.75 $56.25 25%
4-Pack $210 $52.50 30%
6-Pack $292.50 $48.75 35%
8-Pack $360 $45.00 40%

Prices current as of September 2026. Shipping is free over $125, which a 2-pack at $120 falls just under.

The honest read on this: pack discounts only save you money on shirts you were going to buy. Buying eight shirts to reach 40 percent off is not a saving if you needed three.

Which colours to buy

If you are building a rotation rather than replacing one shirt, weight it toward neutrals. Black and white do the most work. Grey and a mid blue extend it without requiring thought. Khaki and charcoal fill out a larger rotation.

A workable split for eight shirts is three black, two white, and one each of a grey, a blue and a khaki. TGTHR's six colours are Black, White, Khaki, Rich Blue, Heather Gray and Charcoal Gray.

Frequently asked questions

How many t-shirts should a man own?

For most people, 8 to 10 everyday tees covers a weekly laundry cycle without rewearing.

Is it worth buying t-shirts in a multi pack?

Only for the quantity you actually need. Per shirt pricing improves with pack size, but the saving is theoretical if the extra shirts sit unworn.

How long should a good t-shirt last?

A dense, well constructed cotton tee, washed cold and dried low, should hold its collar and shape for several years of regular wear.
